11:30am - 2:00pm

The Friends of Children with Special Needs (FCSN) building.
The name is quite a misnomer. As we shall soon see, there are services for children as well as adults.

FCSN relies on generous donations. This is the "Donor Tree", and no amount is ever too small.

AHSA members arrive and are received at the FCSN lobby by their FCSN counterparts: Anna Wang (VP of Programs), Sylvia Yeh (Executive Business Director, Adult Day Program Director), and Linda Huang (Board member).

After visiting a few classrooms, the tour leads to a visit to the kitchen. Here a group of selfless volunteers are busy making chicken sandwich lunch.

Now the multipurpose room, where a group of adults are doing hula dance. The instructor (in purple) is over eighty years old! She is in excellent shape, yet another living proof that dancing is good for health.

The hula exercise. Because of the time of the day, this is an adult group. The children group is later in the day, when they get off school.

It is obvious that this is a cross cultural group of people with special needs. They are adults of all ethnicities.

The adults dance and sing along, enjoying their activities, as AHSA members look on and admire the patience of the instructor, and the fun the adults are having.

It says "Friends of Children with Special Needs" (and in Chinese, "Chinese children with Special Needs"). This is no longer the case. The Facility may have started that way, but now they have expanded to be all-encompassing and all-inclusive to accept people (children and adults) of all ethnicities - a very noble goal.

A video of the hula dance exercise. Note how participants are enjoying themselves. It takes some patience, but with persistence, they are getting better and better.

A schedule for the children service.

Now the AHSA members are being briefed on the history and mission of FCSN, and their services.

Here Anna W. is introducing the children service. Many children, though with special needs, have certain hidden talents. If these talents are identified, they can "Soar to New Heights", becoming for example, accomplished saxophone player, or becoming a valuable part of the workforce.

Halfway through the introduction, Renee walks in. She proudly serves a birthday cake to the visitors and hosts. It is her 16th(?) birthday.

Sylvia is introducing the adult programs and services.

The meeting now enters a discussion phase.

The visitors are now ready to visit the housing facility of members of FCSN. The apartment units are just behind the FCSN facility.

Raymond Hu, son of a renowned individual, will be showing his apartment to AHSA members.

The apartment buildings.

Ditto. All units have the same layout.

Each apartment has four bedrooms. This is the common living room.

And the kitchen.

Raymond's bedroom. Raymond has a number of photos of football stars on his wall. When asked if he plays football, he replies, "No. But I love to watch."

Raymond and Cindy Chua. They are boy and girl friends.

Note that the apartment units are no different from other apartment units from leasing companies.
Members do learn how to fend and take care of themselves, including preparing meals.

Members decorate the apartments to their liking.

Raymond, Cindy, and Nancy Eddy (Housing supervisor). Raymond and Cindy travel a lot. Cindy has been to Italy, that is where she got that sweater.

The library of the FCSN facility was built with funds and support from these two individuals.

In the library.

Carole proudly shows off her knitting piece.

A video showing how a volunteer of FCSN (Jennie Chui) patiently teaching Carole how to knit.
Most training require a little more patience, but the end result is usually priceless.

A volunteer instructor is teaching Cindy how to use a computer.

Linda and Carmelita in deep discussion to see how AHSA and FCSN can further their working relationship.

AHSA will be helping and volunteering time to teach members of FCSN to learn to dance as a lifetime skill.
